How to make a monthly budget for 2027 (simple 5-step method)
A simple 5-step method to build a monthly budget for 2027 that you can actually stick to, with a free example and a ready-made spreadsheet.
1. Start with your real monthly income
Write down what actually lands in your account each month after tax — salary, side income, benefits. If your income changes from month to month, use your lowest normal month. Budgeting from a number you are sure of is what keeps a budget alive.
2. List your fixed bills first
Rent or mortgage, utilities, phone and internet, insurance, loan payments and subscriptions. These are the same every month, so they are the easiest to plan. Add them up: this is the part of your income that is already spoken for.
3. Give every flexible expense a limit
Groceries, eating out, transport, clothing, gifts, fun. Look at the last two or three months of your bank statement and set a limit a little below your average. Small, realistic cuts last longer than big ones.
4. Pay your savings like a bill
Decide on a savings amount — even 5% of your income is a strong start — and move it on payday, before you spend. Treating savings as a fixed bill is the single habit that makes the biggest difference.
5. Track every expense for one month, then adjust
Write down each purchase in one line: date, category, amount. At the end of the month compare budget vs. actual. Move money from categories where you spent less to the ones where you needed more, and repeat.
Make it easier
A spreadsheet makes steps 4 and 5 automatic: you type one line per expense and it adds up each category, compares it with your budget and shows your savings rate.
